Renowned climate activist Greta Thunberg, along with a group of 11 international campaigners, has embarked on a daring journey to the Gaza Strip in an effort to deliver humanitarian supplies and draw international attention to the deepening crisis in the region. The activists are aboard the Madleen, a ship managed by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, which set sail from Catania, a port city in southern Italy, on Sunday afternoon.

Their goal is to break through Israel’s strict naval blockade and reach Gaza’s shores to provide much-needed assistance. Speaking at a press event before departure, Greta, visibly emotional, expressed the urgency of the mission. “Even when the odds are against us, we must keep going,” she said, holding back tears. “The real danger lies not in sailing but in the world’s silence as people suffer in plain view.”

The voyage is expected to take seven days if not interrupted by authorities. Israel has warned against unauthorized access to Gaza, as its military operations continue with the stated aim of dismantling Hamas and rescuing the remaining hostages taken during the October 7, 2023 attacks.

Those attacks by Hamas-led fighters left about 1,200 Israelis dead and 251 abducted. Since then, the Israeli counteroffensive has killed roughly 54,000 Palestinians, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, though it doesn’t separate civilian from militant casualties. Israel firmly denies any allegations of genocide, calling such accusations false and hateful.

While some aid is now allowed into Gaza, international agencies warn it’s far from enough. Famine is looming, and millions remain in urgent need. By risking their safety, Thunberg and her fellow activists hope to shine a light on a crisis the world can no longer afford to ignore.
