German Government Bans Largest "Reich Citizen" Group for Undermining Democracy

The German government has banned the largest "Reich citizen" group, an extremist far-right organization that calls itself the "Kingdom of Germany" and aims to destabilize the country's democratic system.

On the morning of May 13, 2025, hundreds of security officers across several states began raiding the group's properties and the homes of key members.

Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt stated that the group had created a "counter-state" within Germany and built criminal economic structures. He emphasized that their antisemitic conspiracy theories and actions against the democratic order would not be tolerated.

"The government will take strong measures against those who threaten our democratic foundations," Dobrindt remarked. The "Reich citizen" movement rejects Germany as a state, claiming the historical German Reich is still in existence. Members refuse to acknowledge the country's democratic institutions, such as its parliament, laws, and courts, and refuse to pay taxes, social security, or fines.
