‘Gen Z Revolution’ in Kathmandu: Thousands Take to Streets Against Social Media Ban and Corruption

On Monday, youths in Nepal’s capital Kathmandu staged massive protests against corruption and the government-imposed social media ban. The unrest began after authorities blocked 26 social media platforms and has now escalated into a larger movement.

Thousands of school and college students, carrying national flags and posters, gathered near the Parliament. Chants echoed: “Stop corruption, not social media” and “Stop silencing the youth’s voice.” Tensions escalated, leading to clashes between protesters and police. Security forces opened fire, resulting in at least 16 deaths and over 100 injuries.

As the situation spiraled out of control, a curfew was imposed across the capital. In several areas, protesters broke barricades and entered restricted zones.

Eyewitness Suhana said the movement is not limited to Gen Z alone; people of all ages are participating. She added that this protest is not just about the social media ban but represents a release of long-standing anger, now transforming into a broader civic rights movement.
