California Governor Gavin Newsom issued a stern warning to Americans, declaring that “democracy is under assault” following President Donald Trump’s decision to deploy the National Guard in California without state authorization. The move, made amid ongoing federal immigration raids and growing public unrest, has significantly escalated tensions between the White House and the state government.

Newsom condemned Trump’s recent actions, describing them as a “military dragnet” targeting ordinary people. He claimed that recent enforcement efforts by federal agents have moved beyond arresting criminals and are now sweeping up undocumented workers such as dishwashers, gardeners, and seamstresses. The governor detailed several incidents, including the detention of a pregnant U.S. citizen and the use of unmarked vehicles near schools, calling the tactics aggressive and unconstitutional.

In a direct message to leaders across the country, Newsom emphasized that what is unfolding in California could soon spread elsewhere. “California may be first – but it clearly won’t end here,” he warned. His remarks underscore growing concerns among state officials over the increasing use of federal force in local jurisdictions. With protests continuing across major cities, Newsom’s statements reflect mounting resistance to Trump’s hardline immigration policies and raise new questions about the balance of power between state and federal authorities.
