Tech billionaire Elon Musk is under renewed public and political scrutiny following a New York Times investigation that alleges he used multiple controlled substances—including ketamine, ecstasy, and psychedelic mushrooms—during his 130-day tenure as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) under the Trump administration in 2024. Citing sources close to Musk, the report details a daily regimen of nearly 20 pills, raising concerns about the billionaire’s fitness for public office. Although Musk previously claimed to use ketamine occasionally for depression, insiders suggest his consumption was far more intense and possibly contributed to health issues like bladder damage.
During his time in office, Musk was tasked with reducing government bureaucracy. While he claimed DOGE saved $105 billion in taxpayer money, federal audits later revealed inflated figures, showing $175 billion in total cuts but with significant fallout—thousands of federal jobs lost, cancelled programs, and disrupted services. Musk's efforts to centralize government data also sparked controversy, especially amid reports of the data being used in aggressive immigration enforcement. His role raised further concerns due to appointments at NASA and the Air Force, both closely tied to his private ventures.
Musk’s exit from DOGE was met with mixed reactions. At a White House press event, he dismissed the NYT report as “fake news,” while President Trump publicly defended him as a “patriot.” However, accounts of erratic behavior—including slurred speech and inappropriate conduct—persist. Combined with personal controversies involving family and relationships, Musk’s public image remains contentious. Despite stepping down after hitting a legal appointment limit, he has pledged $100 million to pro-Trump initiatives ahead of the 2026 midterms, signaling ongoing political ambitions.
