Dalai Lama confirms continuation of his institution, affirms Gaden Phodrang Trust holds sole authority over his reincarnation, as global followers including Tib
In a heartfelt and reassuring message, the Dalai Lama has confirmed that the institution of the Dalai Lama will continue, bringing clarity to a matter that has remained uncertain for years. As he nears his 90th birthday on July 6, the spiritual leader shared a detailed statement that touched the hearts of millions of his followers.
At the core of his announcement was a strong reaffirmation that the Gaden Phodrang Trust, his official office, will have the sole authority to oversee the recognition of his future reincarnation. "No one else has any such authority to interfere in this matter," the Dalai Lama said firmly, ensuring the process remains rooted in Tibetan Buddhist tradition.
He recalled past discussions, dating back to 1969, where he had already expressed that the continuation of his reincarnation should be up to the people. In a 2011 meeting with heads of various Tibetan Buddhist traditions, he again raised the question of whether the institution should carry on. Though he hadn’t spoken publicly about it in the last 14 years, letters and heartfelt messages from across the globe poured in from Tibet, Mongolia, Himalayan regions, and even mainland China all urging him to continue the legacy.
Deeply moved by these appeals, he said he is now confirming the continuation of the Dalai Lama institution. Celebrations are already being planned in Dharamshala’s Mcleodganj, home to the Tibetan government-in-exile, to honor his 90th birthday. Leaders of the Central Tibetan Administration, including Sikyong Penpa Tsering and Deputy Speaker Dolma Tsering, hinted that the Dalai Lama might share more about his successor during these celebrations.
With wisdom, humility, and a deep sense of responsibility, the Dalai Lama’s message is not just about succession it's about preserving a sacred legacy for future generations.
