Amid rising India-Pakistan conflict, China calls for calm and peaceful resolution, expressing deep concern over military escalation and offering to play a const
China on Saturday issued a strong appeal to both India and Pakistan to remain calm and exercise restraint, urging a return to peaceful dialogue amidst reports of escalating military conflict between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry expressed deep concern over the rising tensions, stating it is closely monitoring the situation. “We urge both sides to prioritise regional peace and stability, maintain calm, avoid provocative actions, and return to peaceful political dialogue,” a ministry spokesperson said, responding to questions on the recent escalation between India and what China refers to as its "ironclad ally", Pakistan.
The spokesperson further noted that resolving the dispute peacefully is vital not just for India and Pakistan, but also for the stability of the wider region—echoing the international community's hopes. “China is ready to play a constructive role to help ease tensions,” the statement added.
Following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir, which resulted in civilian casualties, India launched precision strikes on terrorist launchpads across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. In retaliation, Pakistan has been carrying out nightly drone attacks, targeting 26 locations from Jammu and Kashmir to Gujarat. The Indian Defence Ministry said it successfully neutralised these threats, including attempts to target airports and military installations.
In diplomatic engagements, Pakistani Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar briefed Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi over a phone call on April 27. Meanwhile, Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan Jiang Zaidong met with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, President Asif Ali Zardari, and Dar.
Meanwhile, the Indian Embassy in Beijing has flagged misleading narratives shared by Chinese media that echoed Pakistani military claims. On May 7, the embassy warned against using outdated visuals and reposted fact-checks debunking false reports circulating on social media.
