Pakistan is preparing to induct China’s fifth-generation FC-31 stealth fighter jets—also known as J-35—into its air force and may deploy them close to the India border. This move marks a significant shift in Pakistan’s airpower strategy and poses a growing security concern for India. The FC-31 is equipped with stealth capabilities, advanced avionics, and precision weaponry, making it harder to detect and intercept. It closely resembles the American F-35 in design and functionality, providing Pakistan with a serious technological upgrade.

According to defense analysts, Pakistan may use the FC-31 to replace its aging fleet of F-16s and JF-17s, enhancing its ability to conduct deep strikes while evading Indian radar systems. The development could give Pakistan a 7–8 year lead over India in terms of fifth-generation air combat capability, as India’s indigenous Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) is still under development. Currently, India relies on 4.5-generation fighters like the French-made Rafale and Russian Sukhoi Su-30 MKIs for frontline air defense.

The possible deployment of FC-31s near the Line of Control reflects deepening China-Pakistan defense collaboration and introduces a new layer of complexity in regional strategic dynamics. Experts suggest that this poses a multi-dimensional threat to India’s national security, especially with the potential for stealth incursions and electronic warfare. In response, India may need to expedite its AMCA project and enhance air surveillance systems to maintain aerial superiority and deter future escalations.
