China is assessing the possibility of trade talks with the U.S. on tariff reductions following recent U.S. overtures. The move comes amid an ongoing tariff war
On May 2, China announced it is evaluating the possibility of engaging in trade talks with the United States over tariff reductions, following multiple recent communications from Washington. The Chinese Commerce Ministry stated that the U.S. had expressed a desire to negotiate on tariff issues through relevant channels. However, it emphasized that the U.S. must demonstrate sincerity, take concrete actions to correct past mistakes, and lift unilateral tariffs for meaningful discussions to take place.
The trade war began when U.S. President Donald Trump imposed steep tariffs on Chinese exports, leading China to retaliate with its own levies. The dispute has escalated with both countries increasing tariffs on each other’s goods. While there have been previous claims of talks between the two nations, China denied any such discussions with Trump or President Xi Jinping.
Despite this, the trade war is having a significant impact on China’s economy, which is already facing a slowdown due to falling exports, weak domestic consumption, and a collapsed housing market. The U.S. remains China's third-largest export market.
