Latest Information on the Sukma Dantewada Encounter:  16 Naxals were killed in a clash between security personnel and the group in the Kerlepal jungle on the Sukma-Dantewada border in Chhattisgarh.  The bodies of the Naxals who were killed have been retrieved by the security forces.  During the firefight, two soldiers suffered minor injuries.

Continued Gunfight, Heavy Weapons Captured

The firefight is still going on in the region, according to Sukma SP Kiran Chavhan.  The District Reserve Guard (DRG) and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) launched a coordinated anti-Naxal operation on Friday, March 28, which is when the encounter started.  The operation was prompted by information the security forces had received about the Naxals' presence in the region.

Numerous weapons, including AK-47 rifles, SLRs, INSAS rifles,.303 rifles, rocket launchers, and other explosives, were taken from the scene of the encounter by the security forces.

Additional Events and the State of Hurt Troops

An IED planted by Naxals in the Narayanpur district earlier Friday wounded one soldier, who was taken to the hospital.  The soldier is undergoing initial treatment, and the police say his status is stable.

The Naxals are being identified, and security personnel are still searching the area.  According to reports, the injured soldiers' status is safe.
