Canadians head to the polls in a tight race between Mark Carney’s Liberals and Pierre Poilievre’s Conservatives, as Trump’s annexation remarks spark a late surg
Canadians headed to the polls Monday in a pivotal election shaped by tensions with the U.S., as Donald Trump’s renewed threats of trade retaliation and annexation stirred last-minute drama. The vote will determine whether newly appointed Prime Minister Mark Carney, leading the Liberals, or Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre will form the next government.
The Liberals had trailed for months, but Trump's provocative social media post—offering "ZERO TARIFFS" if Canada became the "51st state"—sparked a patriotic surge that boosted Carney’s standing. Both Carney and Poilievre sharply rejected Trump’s interference. Carney, a former central bank chief with no prior electoral experience, focused his campaign on countering Trump and defending Canadian sovereignty.
Poilievre, aiming to steer attention to domestic issues like inflation and housing, criticized the Liberals for a “lost decade” under Trudeau.
Voters turned out in large numbers amid unseasonably warm weather, with many describing the election as critical to Canada’s direction.
The final pre-election polls showed a tight race, with the Liberals slightly ahead. If they win, it would be a remarkable comeback after trailing by over 20 points in January, when Trudeau announced his resignation.
