Canada to Recognize Palestinian State at UN
On July 30, 2025, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that Canada plans to formally recognize a Palestinian state at the United Nations this September. He stated that the move is intended to help preserve the viability of a two-state solution. Carney emphasized that this recognition would be contingent on the Palestinian Authority undertaking key reforms—particularly commitments to improve governance and to hold general elections in 2026, explicitly excluding Hamas from participation.
Historically, Canada maintained that it would only recognize a Palestinian state following successful peace negotiations with Israel. However, Carney said that current conditions on the ground, including widespread starvation in Gaza, have made the possibility of a Palestinian state increasingly unlikely.
He cited several factors contributing to this deteriorating situation: the ongoing threat posed by Hamas to Israeli security, the rapid expansion of Israeli settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, and a recent Knesset vote supporting the annexation of the West Bank.
“Canada strongly condemns the Israeli government’s role in allowing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza to unfold,” Carney stated.
