Bill Gates accuses Elon Musk of causing millions of preventable child deaths by slashing foreign aid under Trump. Musk denies the claim; Gates warns private don
Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has accused Elon Musk, head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), of endangering children in the world’s poorest countries by slashing foreign aid under the Trump administration. In an interview with Financial Times, Gates said, “The image of the world’s richest man causing the deaths of the world’s poorest children is disturbing.” He argued that the aid cuts have reversed progress in fighting diseases like measles, HIV, and polio.
Musk denied the accusations on X, calling Gates “a huge liar.” The White House defended Musk, stating he is a “patriot” dedicated to eliminating waste and supporting American taxpayers. Gates warned that deep funding cuts by global governments could result in millions of preventable deaths over the next four to six years.
Musk has taken credit for dismantling USAID, with 80% of its programs now scrapped. The agency had spent nearly $44 billion in 2023. While Gates acknowledged Musk's potential as a philanthropist, he criticized his current role. The Gates Foundation plans to boost its annual budget to $10 billion by 2026, but Gates stressed private donors cannot fully offset declining government aid.
