Amazon refutes reports that it will display import tariff charges alongside product prices, following criticism from the Trump administration. The clarification
Amazon has denied reports that it plans to display tariff-related costs alongside product prices on its website, pushing back against speculation sparked by a Punchbowl News article. The outlet claimed Amazon was preparing to show how much of each item’s price came from tariffs, prompting a sharp reaction from the Trump administration.
However, Amazon clarified that only its low-cost storefront, Haul, briefly considered the idea internally — and it was never approved.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt had earlier criticized the alleged move as “hostile and political,” even accusing Amazon of ties to Chinese propaganda. President Trump reportedly called Amazon founder Jeff Bezos to express concern, but later praised him for “solving the problem quickly.”
Economists warn that Trump’s tariffs, and retaliatory measures from trade partners, are fueling inflation and raising costs for businesses. Rivals like Temu and Shein have already adjusted pricing to reflect increased import duties.
Tulane professor Rob Lalka noted that although Amazon denied implementing such changes, the concept reflects broader trends in how companies handle rising tariffs and customer transparency. “Even receipts are a form of messaging,” he said, emphasizing the political dimensions of pricing.
