A 6.1-magnitude undersea earthquake struck near the Greek island of Crete early Thursday, May 22, 2025, and was widely felt across the Aegean Sea. According to the Geodynamics Institute of Athens, the quake occurred around 55 kilometers north of Crete at a depth of 37 kilometers beneath the seabed.
Regional official Giorgos Tsapakos informed state-run television that preliminary assessments revealed no injuries or major damage in the affected areas. The tremor was reported to have been felt across numerous islands in the Aegean.
Efthymios Lekkas, head of the Earthquake and Planning Protection Organisation, explained that earthquakes occurring at greater depths generally cause less damage at the surface.
Greece, located along significant fault lines, frequently experiences seismic activity.
