A 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck a coastal town in Turkey early Tuesday (June 3, 2025), triggering panic among residents, officials reported. Dozens were injured as people jumped from windows and balconies to flee their homes in fear. A 14-year-old girl, taken to the hospital, died after what officials described as an anxiety attack. It remains unclear whether she had any preexisting health conditions.
The Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency stated that the quake occurred at 2:17 a.m. and was centered in the Mediterranean Sea near the popular tourist destination of Marmaris. The tremor was felt in nearby areas, including the Greek island of Rhodes, jolting many awake.
Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya confirmed that around 70 individuals sustained injuries caused by panic-induced falls, but no structural damage to buildings was reported.
Turkey lies on several active fault lines and is highly earthquake-prone. In 2023, a devastating 7.8 magnitude quake killed over 53,000 people across 11 southern and southeastern provinces, with another 6,000 casualties in northern Syria.
