Top Indian cyclist Esow Alban was reportedly hit from behind by two speeding motorcyclists while training near the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex in New Delhi on Wednesday. Esow, who sustained minor injuries, shared the incident on Instagram, describing how the bikers, traveling at over 100 km/h, struck him despite him being focused and riding within his lane. He expressed frustration that they blamed him and showed no remorse. The collision left him with bruises on his hands and buttocks and damaged his bike’s rear wheel.
Esow, a 24-year-old from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and a trainee at the Sports Authority of India Cycling Academy, is the first Indian cyclist to win an individual medal at the global level, securing a silver in the keirin event at the 2018 junior track world championships, along with additional medals in 2019.
He emphasized cyclist safety, urging respect and space for cyclists on the road, highlighting the risks they face. Esow also thanked his coaches and an officer assisting with the investigation.
Maninder Pal Singh, Secretary General of the Cycling Federation of India, called the accident minor and confirmed that Esow received first aid and is expected to resume training soon.
