Supreme Court dismisses PIL seeking cancellation of India-Pakistan Asia Cup match scheduled for September 14.
The Supreme Court of India has declined to urgently hear a public interest litigation (PIL) that sought the cancellation of the India-Pakistan cricket match scheduled for September 14 in the Asia Cup T20 tournament. The bench, comprising Justices JK Maheshwari and Vijay Bishnoi, found no urgency in the matter and dismissed the plea.
The petitioners, four law students, argued that playing the match so soon after the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor was against national interest and could undermine the sacrifices of armed forces and civilians who lost their lives in the attack. They contended that engaging in sports with Pakistan, a country allegedly sheltering terrorists, could hurt the sentiments of the victims' families and compromise national dignity and security.
However, the Supreme Court bench was unmoved by these arguments. Justice Maheshwari remarked, "What is the urgency? It's a match, let it be," effectively ending the matter. The court's decision underscores the importance of maintaining the scheduled sporting event despite the petitioners' concerns.
