Former UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak praised India’s growing global impact while attending the IPL 2025 final in Ahmedabad. He and his wife, Akshata Murty, were seen cheering for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) from the stands at the Narendra Modi Stadium. RCB was facing Punjab Kings in what was an exciting end to the 18th IPL season.

Speaking after RCB’s batting innings, Sunak described the environment as “absolutely electric,” sharing that it was his first time experiencing cricket in India, and he had never witnessed anything quite like it. RCB had earlier secured their spot in the final after a dominant win in Qualifier 1 against PBKS, while Punjab Kings made it through by beating Mumbai Indians in the second qualifier. RCB put up a competitive total of 190/9 in their 20 overs.

Earlier in the day, Sunak commented on cricket’s return to the Olympics after more than 100 years. He connect this historic move to India’s influence on the world stage, describing that the country’s passion and growing presence have made such changes possible. He said, “Why is cricket back in the Olympics for the first time in 100 years? Because of India.”

An ardent cricket lover, Sunak also applauded the Indian Premier League (IPL) for transforming the sport. He mentions how the IPL has become a global dream for players and praised the BCCI for expanding chances, especially through moves like the Women’s Premier League. His presence and words reflected both his love for cricket and recognition of India’s increasing influence in international sports.
