India’s Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra secured his first Diamond League title in two years with a winning throw of 88.16m at the Paris leg of the event. The 27-year-old javelin star sealed victory in his very first attempt late Friday night, finishing ahead of Germany’s Julian Weber and Brazil’s Luiz Mauricio Da Silva. Despite not breaching the 90m mark this time, Chopra topped a world-class field that included five athletes from the prestigious 90m club. Weber claimed second with 87.88m, while Da Silva finished third with 86.62m.
Chopra’s win in Paris marked his first Diamond League victory since June 2023 in Lausanne. Since then, he had placed second in six events, including the Doha leg in May 2025, where he recorded a personal best of 90.23m but lost to Weber. On Friday, after his initial 88.16m, Chopra managed 85.10m in his second attempt, followed by three fouls and a final throw of 82.89m. The competition also featured past champions Julius Yego, Keshorn Walcott, and Anderson Peters, but none were able to cross the 82m mark.
Speaking after the event, Chopra expressed satisfaction with his performance and revealed his upcoming plans, including competing in Ostrava on June 24 and hosting the inaugural Neeraj Chopra Classic in Bengaluru on July 5. “I’m happy with my throw and first place,” he said, acknowledging that conditions and body readiness would determine future performances. Chopra had started his 2025 season with a minor meet win in South Africa. His victory in Paris reaffirms his position as one of the leading contenders in javelin this season as he eyes more 90m-plus throws.
