Former Indian cricket captain MS Dhoni’s bid to trademark the phrase ‘Captain Cool’—a moniker earned through his composed on-field persona—has been officially accepted and published by the Trademark Registry of India, according to ESPNcricinfo. If no objections are raised within 120 days from its acceptance on June 16, the trademark will be granted. It has been filed under categories involving sports training, coaching, and related services.

Dhoni originally applied for the trademark in June 2023, but was informed that Prabha Skill Sports (OPC) Private Limited had already registered the term. In response, Dhoni filed a rectification petition, accusing the company of bad faith and of attempting to profit from his well-known identity and the phrase’s widespread recognition.

“The registration was done with dishonest intent to mislead the public and gain illegitimate commercial benefits from my reputation,” Dhoni’s application argued. The case went through at least four hearings before Dhoni’s claim was accepted.

Dhoni most recently led the Chennai Super Kings during the 18th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), stepping in for regular skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad, who missed the tournament due to injury. Unfortunately, CSK finished last in the standings for the first time in their 16-season history, marking a tough campaign.

Throughout his illustrious international career, Dhoni achieved unparalleled success as a leader—guiding India to victory in the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007, the 2011 ODI World Cup at home, and the Champions Trophy in 2013. He remains the only captain to have won all three ICC white-ball tournaments. Known for his unflappable temperament, Dhoni transformed high-pressure moments into historic victories.

As a batsman, Dhoni revolutionised the finisher’s role in ODIs. His unbeaten 183 against Sri Lanka in 2005 still stands as the highest score by a wicketkeeper in the format. He scored over 10,000 ODI runs with an impressive average of 50.57, underscoring his consistency and impact.

Behind the wickets, Dhoni was equally influential, redefining modern wicketkeeping with his quick reflexes and game-reading skills. Across formats, he accumulated 17,266 runs, effected 829 dismissals, and represented India in 538 international matches.
