India vs Pakistan WCL Match
Former Australian pacer Brett Lee has offered his thoughts on the recently cancelled India-Pakistan clash in the ongoing World Championships of Legends (WCL). The much-anticipated match, scheduled to take place at Edgbaston in Birmingham, was officially scrapped after WCL released a statement confirming the development. According to reports, several former Indian cricketers declined to participate in the fixture.
The refusal came in the wake of the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam that targeted tourists, straining Indo-Pak ties further. When asked about the cancellation, Lee addressed the sensitive issue by taking a balanced stance. “It’s a tough question. I love India, I love Pakistan. I hope both sides reach a mutual understanding. But right now, we’re all here for the tournament—India, Australia, South Africa. We’re all inclusive. What happened last night happened. We pushed for it,” said Lee, who is part of the Australia Champions squad.
The WCL said it had announced the match with the intention of creating positive memories, especially after a recent volleyball game between the two nations. However, it admitted that the move may have unintentionally upset sentiments, particularly among the Indian legends, and decided to cancel the game. The organisers also issued an apology for any hurt caused.
Indian cricketer Shikhar Dhawan later shared an email he had sent to the WCL organisers on May 11, where he had already communicated the players’ unwillingness to play against Pakistan, citing the prevailing geo-political climate. Reiterating his position on social media, Dhawan wrote in Hindi, “Jo kadam 11 May ko liya, uspe aaj bhi waise hi khada hoon. Mera desh mere liye sab kuch hai, aur desh se badhkar kuch nahi hota,” meaning, “I stand by the decision I took on May 11. My country means everything to me, and nothing is above it.”
