After injury layoff Pant named captain of India A for South Africa series.
Rishabh Pant is back in business and how. The star Indian wicket-keeper batter has been appointed captain of the India A squad for two four-day (red-ball) matches against South Africa A, signalling his full recovery and return to competitive shape.
Pant’s road back hasn’t been smooth. In July during the tour of England he suffered a serious foot injury a fractured foot while batting at Manchester. He missed the home Test series versus the West Indies and other commitments as he focused on rehabilitation.
Now, the board has named him captain for what amounts to a preparatory stage: the first match begins October 30 in Bengaluru, followed closely by another on November 6. These games act as warm-up for the full senior Test series against South Africa beginning mid-November.
The selection signals three things: one, the selectors’ faith in his fitness; two, a vote of confidence in his leadership; and three, a chance to rebuild his form and mental energy ahead of major assignments. Young vice-captain Sai Sudharsan and a mix of new and experienced names (including Devdutt Padikkal, Ayush Mhatre, Mohammed Siraj) highlight both continuity and fresh blood.
For Pant personally, the appointment offers redemption. His last full innings in competitive international cricket may feel distant, and fans have been waiting for the “old Pant” chisel-hard reflexes behind the stumps, audacious attacking batting, fearless mindset. This leadership role gives him focus and purpose.
From a team perspective, India A’s role is more than “second string” it’s a nurture ground for future stars, a testing ground for combinations, especially with the senior team’s packed schedule and changing dynamics. As captain, Pant will carry the dual burden of personal comeback and guiding younger peers.
Cricket devotees will watch closely: How will Pant set the tone? Will his injury leave any rust? And can he balance keeping wicket, scoring runs and leading? For now, the answer is: he’s ready to step up. India A, under Pant’s direction, starts their journey and if he leads well, he may find a fast-track back into the senior side, stronger than before.
