Swami Avimukteshwarananda Saraswati, the Shankaracharya of Jyotirmath in Joshimath, Uttarakhand, has declared that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is no longer a f
The Shankaracharya explained that if a person does not believe in the scriptures and religious texts of Hinduism, they cannot be considered a Hindu. Referring to Rahul Gandhi’s statements against the Manusmriti, Swami Avimukteshwarananda mentioned that he had sought clarification from Gandhi. However, when no response was received, he publicly announced that Rahul Gandhi is no longer considered a Hindu.
He questioned, “How can someone who criticizes the Manusmriti be called a Hindu? Any true follower of Sanatan Dharma will oppose such criticism. Just as a Muslim who disrespects the Quran or a Christian who disrespects the Bible cannot be considered part of their religion, the same applies here.” He emphasized that the Manusmriti is a part of Hindu religious scripture, and disrespecting it raises serious questions about one’s identity as a Hindu.
Regarding Rahul Gandhi wearing a janeyu (sacred thread), the Shankaracharya remarked, “Just as someone can play the role of a king in a drama, wearing a janeyu doesn’t make someone a Hindu.” He added that faith and belief in Hinduism are essential—without them, one cannot truly be a Hindu.
On other matters, Swami Avimukteshwarananda expressed sorrow over the incident in Pahalgam and said the government must respond to it. He demanded the dissolution of the Waqf Board and said political parties and governments should stop interfering in religious matters. He also urged the Prime Minister to take strong action against Pakistan and to liberate Pakistan-occupied Kashmir at the earliest.
Criticizing both the BJP and Congress, the Shankaracharya alleged that the two parties are colluding, as both initially opposed caste-based census but later supported it.
