As Sensex and Nifty plunge over 5%, Rahul Gandhi and other opposition leaders criticize PM Modi's silence on the economic fallout of Trump’s tariff move, urging
As Indian stock markets plummeted due to Donald Trump’s tariffs, opposition leader Rahul Gandhi jibed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying that while US President Donald Trump “has blown the lid off the illusion,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi “is nowhere to be seen.”
“Trump has blown the lid off the illusion. Reality is biting back. PM Modi is nowhere to be seen,” the Congress MP wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Gandhi further said that “India has to accept reality” and has “no choice but to build a resilient, production-based economy that works for all Indians”.
The Sensex and Nifty saw a sharp plunge of over 5% on Monday, echoing a steep decline in global stock markets. The BSE’s 30-share Sensex dropped by 5.19%, or 3,914 points, opening at 71,449.94. Similarly, the Nifty fell by 5%, or 1,146.05 points, starting the day at 21,758.4. This marks the most significant single-day drop in nearly 10 months.
Commenting on the situation, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh took a jab at Prime Minister Modi, comparing him to Donald Trump and claiming both leaders are adept at inflicting economic harm on their nations.
“It is no wonder Mr. Modi and Mr. Trump describe themselves as good friends. Both are experts in giving their economies self-inflicted wounds,” he wrote on X. “November 8, 2016, was demonetization. April 2, 2025, was the bizarre reciprocal tariffs. Markets are reacting predictably in a terrifying manner”
TMC MP Sagarika Ghose also took a dig at the government saying that while there was a “bloodbath in the markets” Modi was “looking for gods in South India”.
