Bollywood star Akshay Kumar has taken a legal step to protect his identity he has moved the Bombay High Court seeking relief under personality rights. Simultaneously, Hrithik Roshan has filed a suit in the Delhi High Court targeting misuse of his likeness, reinforcing a growing trend of celebrities pushing back against unauthorized AI and digital exploitation.

In his petition, Akshay Kumar seeks judicial protection against unauthorized use of his name, image, voice, distinctive style, mannerisms, and other identifiable traits. The move comes amid rising concern over deepfake technology, AI-generated impersonations, and quick viral spread of manipulated media online. He’s aiming to curtail any commercial exploitation or identity misuse that may damage his brand or reputation without his consent.

Hrithik’s suit echoes the same concerns. He cites large-scale misuse of his persona through deepfake images/videos, counterfeit merchandise, false brand endorsements, impersonated social media profiles, and e commerce misuse as key grievances. His plea also names platforms and sellers as parties to the suit, signaling that the responsibility lies not just with direct creators but with intermediaries enabling misuse.

This legal push is not unique. In recent months, many prominent figures Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, Karan Johar, Kumar Sanu, and more have already sought courts’ intervention to protect their personality rights. In September, the Delhi High Court barred various platforms from exploiting Aishwarya Rai’s identity for commercial gain, reinforcing that courts are increasingly recognizing the risks of digital impersonation.

At its core, personality rights (or right of publicity) allow individuals to control commercial use of their image, name, likeness, and more. In India, these rights are grounded in principles of privacy, dignity (Article 21 of the Constitution), and legal precedents rather than a single codified statute. With AI tools making it easier than ever to fabricate likenesses, the courts face pressing questions on how to balance free expression with protecting personal identity.

Through these court moves, Akshay and Hrithik are staking a claim not just for themselves, but for public figures in the digital age to assert that one’s personality is not a commodity to be exploited arbitrarily.
