West Bengal’s NEET UG 2025 counselling has been indefinitely suspended just before seat allotment leaving over 11,000 aspirants anxious and seeking clarity amid
In a move that has sent ripples of anxiety through the medical aspirant community, the West Bengal Medical Counselling Committee (WBMCC) has indefinitely suspended the NEET UG 2025 counselling for both MBBS and BDS courses. The announcement, made on August 18, declared the admission process “in abeyance until further orders,” bringing everything to an abrupt halt.
This decision comes just a day after WBMCC published a revised provisional state merit list, confirming over 11,178 candidates as eligible for state quota seats under the 85% category. To compound matters, the round 1 seat allotment, scheduled for August 20, has now been called off, leaving countless futures hanging in limbo.
The origin of this unexpected suspension traces back to ongoing legal challenges surrounding OBC reservation. The Calcutta High Court initially paused the counselling process, citing these disputes. After allowing WBMCC to publish a fresh merit list, the court’s directive seemed to pave the way for admissions to proceed only for the process to be halted yet again.
Students and families are now caught in a distressing vacuum. Many had pinned hopes on the round 1 allotment, planning their next steps based on the expected timeline. Union Minister of State for Education, Sukanta Majumdar, voiced strong criticism. On X, he warned that this sudden disruption locks students’ futures in darkness and hinted at political motivations behind the halt.
This unsettling turn of events puts thousands of aspiring doctors in a challenging wait-and-see game. With reports circulating and anxiety mounting, all eyes now await a clear directive hoping for a swift resolution that brings back direction and reassurance to dreams paused mid-journey.
