On October 7, 2025, schools in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh will remain closed in observance of Maharishi Valmiki Jayanti, a gazetted holiday in the respective states. In Delhi, the Directorate of Education had already included Valmiki Jayanti in its official annual school calendar for the 2025 - 26 session, confirming that all government schools and related educational institutions will observe the holiday. In Uttar Pradesh, the state government issued a notification on October 5 declaring the day as a public holiday to honour Maharishi Valmiki’s birth anniversary.

Valmiki Jayanti commemorates the birth of Maharishi Valmiki, revered as the Adikavi (first poet) of Sanskrit literature and the credited author of the epic Ramayana. The day is observed through cultural events, recitations of the Ramayana, and homage to Valmiki’s contributions to spirituality and literature.

In addition to school closures, Delhi government offices will also remain shut on October 7 in deference to the holiday, with official programmes, processions, and tribute meetings planned across the capital. The Chief Minister and other dignitaries are expected to participate in these observances.

In Jammu and Kashmir, schools will also remain closed on October 6 and 7 albeit not in connection with Valmiki Jayanti but due to heavy rainfall warnings issued by the Meteorological Department. The closure in J and K is therefore weather-driven rather than celebratory.

This holiday comes during a month particularly rich in school breaks. In the calendar for 2025, Valmiki Jayanti is listed among October’s gazetted school holidays. Students and parents are advised to keep in mind that private schools or institutions in other states may or may not observe the holiday depending on local decisions.
