A candid outcry from Delhi’s educators as they condemn an Education Ministry order, arguing it undermines academic merit and devalues advanced degrees.
In a move that stirred emotions across Delhi’s academic community, the Democratic Teachers’ Initiative (DTI) has strongly condemned the Education Ministry’s “recovery” directive targeting increments for MPhil and PhD holders. The backlash was swift and pointed—the DTI dismissed a recent Delhi University (DU) circular urging schools to maintain the “status quo” as nothing more than a smokescreen. Their message? It’s a contrived effort to sideline educators who’ve invested in research and higher learning.
Professor Surjeet Mazumdar, president of the JNU Teachers’ Association, put it plainly: stripping away increments for advanced degrees sends a dangerous signal that academic excellence—and the pursuit of knowledge are being sidelined. It’s not just about pay; it's about respect for learning and for the scholars who drive it.
At its heart, this isn’t a financial skirmish it’s a battle for the soul of academia. By treating academic credentials as optional extras rather than essential investments, the Ministry risks reminding educators that their dedication to research isn't valued. And when that happens, the ripple affects every student whose classroom becomes a little less inspired.
So, this protest isn’t just a query over policy it’s a broader plea for recognition, respect, and the belief that in a nation striving for progress, its thinkers and teachers matter profoundly. In the end, the DTI isn’t just fighting for increments they’re fighting for the essence of academic worth.
