Schools in Kolkata are now marking the cases of plagiarism (duplication) regarding homework done with the help of school AI tools such as Chatgpt, Google Gemini and Meta AI. These tools have now become everyday helpful for students, but they are not always safe. Especially teachers of secondary and higher secondary classes are constantly worrying about AI-related assignments-such as essays and math solutions. This growing trend has raised questions on academic honesty and has launched a debate about the role of technology in Kolkata.

A principal said, "We know that children are using AI... but the content teachers directly copied from AI are clearly visible." He said that essays made at home are completely different from the weak efforts made in the classroom. At the same time, parents' attitude is slightly different. Some parents use AI to explain the subject to their children or teach the structure of ideas-not to write the entire essay. A parent said, "We use AI to understand what kind of writing is needed ... but she does not copy it directly." He also emphasized that learning is his original objective.

Meanwhile, students praise AI’s usefulness. A class 10 student said it “makes the lengthy answers short” and helps understand exam patterns, while a class 8 student noted how it can generate practice questions and reasoning problems not always available online.

The debate unfolding in Kolkata reflects a huge question: how can educators balance the undeniable benefits of AI in learning with safeguarding honest, independent thinking? It’s a timely discourse in an age when technology can both empower and compromise education.
