NMC banned renewal of medical seats due to allegations of bribery in Belagavi Medical College

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has banned the renewal of undergraduate and postgraduate seats due to allegations of bribery on a medical college in Belagavi, giving a strict message about morality in medical education.

In this decision, which created a stir in the medical education sector, NMC refused to allow a private medical college in Belagavi, Karnataka to renew the seats for the 2025–26 academic session. The step was taken when a senior evaluation of the NMC was caught taking a bribe of ₹ 10 lakh from the college to give a favorable inspection report to the institute.

According to officials, this incident is not just about one college it’s about setting a precedent. Bribery charges against a Belagavi medical college resulted in the National Medical Commission blocking the renewal of undergraduate and postgraduate seats, sending a strong message about ethics in medical education. The NMC has also halted all left proposals from the institution, including applications for new courses and seat increases, until further notice.

For students and parents, the development is worrying. Many are now uncertain about admissions and future prospects. Meanwhile, the college administration has not made an official statement, but legal recourse is likely.

The NMC emphasized that integrity and transparency in medical education are non-negotiable. This case highlights the urgent need for reforms and tighter regulation, especially in private institutions where monetary influence may sometimes outweigh merit.

As the investigation continues, the incident sent as a warning. In a country where medical seats are so highly taken, actions like these damage public trust. Hopefully, this strong stance by NMC will pave the way for cleaner practices going forward.
