Mission Mathematics Expanded: Delhi Govt Launches Special Maths Classes for Class 6 and 7

Delhi government extends Mission Mathematics to Classes 6 and 7, offering special support classes to students with weak maths performance through small batches,

The Delhi government has expanded its flagship Mission Mathematics programme to include Class 6 and 7 students in government schools. Previously focused on Classes 8 to 10, the initiative now aims to address early learning gaps in mathematics and support students struggling with basic concepts. The decision follows promising results seen in Class 10 board exams and internal assessments, prompting the Directorate of Education (DoE) to widen its scope starting this academic session.

According to a circular issued on June 23, students scoring below 40%, those who passed with grace marks, or cleared compartment exams in mathematics will be prioritized. Teachers may also nominate students they feel require additional support. Special Mathematics Enrichment (SME) classes are set to begin on July 7, with sessions held before or after school hours in small batches of 20 to 25 students. Schools will receive digital learning materials three times a week, including worksheets, activities, and practice sheets, all aligned with the syllabus. To ensure smooth implementation, schools may use School Management Committee (SMC) funds to hire trained resource persons if needed.

The programme’s structure is being further strengthened with zonal-level monitoring. A Zonal Mission Mathematics Committee, led by the Deputy Director of Education and comprising trained math teachers and school principals, will oversee the progress. For Class 10 students, a detailed performance review will follow the mid-term exams to identify and address learning gaps. The SCERT will conduct teacher training workshops that emphasize experiential learning, and maths-related competitions will be organized to encourage innovative teaching practices. A central digital system is also being developed to track student attendance and progress, aiming to make mathematics more accessible, engaging, and less intimidating for all learners across Delhi’s government schools.
