Kerala has become the first state in India to make robotics education compulsory for all class 10 students, covering 4.3 lakh learners starting from the new academic year on June 2. Robotics has been incorporated into the class 10 ICT textbook, specifically in the sixth chapter titled “The World of Robots,” designed to introduce students to basic robotics concepts through interactive activities, an official statement said.

Students will learn circuit building, using sensors and actuators, and controlling electronic devices with programming, explained K Anvar Sadath, CEO of KITE and Chairman of the ICT Textbook Committee. KITE, the technical wing of Kerala’s General Education Department, has already distributed 29,000 robotics kits to high schools statewide to support the curriculum rollout.

This initiative builds on Kerala’s earlier achievement of making Artificial Intelligence (AI) education mandatory for all seventh graders last year, another national first. The textbook’s first hands-on activity involves using components like Arduino breadboards, IR sensors, servo motors, and jumper wires to create an automated sanitizer dispenser activated by hand detection.

Students will also explore AI-based smart home systems, such as face-recognition smart doors, using the Pictoblocks software and webcams, along with Arduino kits. KITE has trained nearly 10,000 teachers so far and plans dedicated robotics training in July. Additional kits will be supplied to private schools following the state syllabus. The textbook is available in Malayalam, English, Tamil, and Kannada.
