Amid an unprecedented heatwave, authorities in Kashmir have ordered a 15-day closure of all government and recognised private schools from June 23 to July 7. The decision, which applies to all schools up to the higher secondary level, follows record-breaking temperatures across the valley, particularly in Srinagar. On Friday, the city recorded a daytime high of 35.5°C, the hottest June day in two decades, along with unusually high night temperatures of 23.2°C, the warmest June night since 1990.

The official order from the Directorate of School Education, Kashmir, emphasized student safety and the need to reduce exposure to extreme weather. Several other regions in the valley are also grappling with abnormally high temperatures. Pahalgam recorded its third-highest June night temperature at 16.8°C, while Kokernag recorded 20.4°C and Kupwara reported 21.1°C, marking its fifth-highest on record. The all-time highest June night temperature in the region, 24.6°C, dates back to June 29, 1978,  a level this year’s heatwave is nearing.

The extreme temperatures have disrupted normal life across the region, prompting health advisories and calls for caution. Residents have been urged to stay indoors during peak heat hours, remain hydrated, and take precautions against heat-related illnesses. The school closures are seen as a critical preventive measure, particularly as many institutions lack adequate cooling infrastructure. Experts say this unusual heat pattern is a stark reminder of the growing impact of climate change on Kashmir’s traditionally mild summer climate. With rising day and night temperatures, officials are closely monitoring the situation and may extend the break if conditions do not improve.
