In a social-justice turn that reads like a thriller, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has exposed a vast medical admission scam worth 18,000 MBBS and postgraduate seats under the NRI quota. This elaborate racket unveiled forged documents, counterfeit embassy seals, and fabricated family trees used to help undeserving students secure coveted seats.

These private medical colleges, working hand in glove with agents, paid intermediaries to construct false NRI sponsors often reusing the same fake credentials across multiple candidates. In many cases, actual NRI families were paid off to lend their names in exchange for cash.

The ED’s raids in West Bengal and Odisha unearthed reams of faked NRI certificates and U.S. notary stamps. These documents were later forwarded to Indian embassies, where officials flagged most as fraudulent.

Reeling from the scandal, regulators sprang into action. Now, NRI certificates must be embassy-verified, and only genuine first- or second-degree relatives qualify as sponsors. Admissions processes have tightened, demanding full transparency.

The repercussions extend further. Unfilled NRI quota seats are to be returned to the general pool, allowing merit-based students a chance at medical education. Officials warn the fallout could impact all NRI quota systems, including MBA, law, and other programs.

This scandal isn’t just about seats it’s about trust. When education especially for aspiring doctors becomes shadowed by corruption, society pays the real price. By shining light on these abuses and enforcing swift reforms, India is safeguarding the spirit of fair access and merit in its professional corridors.
