BTech Student’s Suicide

On the night of 15 August, this tragic incident took place in a private hostel in Greater Noida. 24 -year -old BTech student Shivam De, who was admitted to the computer science program of Sharda University, was found hanging on hanging.  A poignant suicide note revealed that he was struggling with deep tension and self-doubt inside. In it, he described himself as "a good student" and wrote that now he cannot bear the burden of academic expectations. He also urged the university to refund his unused fees to his parents a gesture of deep concern for them even in his final message.

According to the university, Shivam had failed to maintain the minimum CGPA required to progress to his third year. Despite being offered opportunities to retake exams and even re-register at a lower fee, he did not return to classes. Desperate attempts by his mentor to guide him including internships and makeup exams apparently did not help.

Shivam’s note carried a broader plea: “If this country wants to be great, start from the real education system.” He framed his death as a personal choice and urged authorities not to hold anyone responsible.

This tragedy is another campus suicide echoed recently, in which a BDS student accused the faculty of harassment in her note. The incident gave rise to arrest and widespread outrage. If we look at both these events, then it is clear that there is a dire need for better mental health support and open communication between students, families and institutions.
