Nitish Kumar Orders Immediate Teacher Vacancy Count Ahead of TRE-4 in Bihar
Ahead of the upcoming assembly elections, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Wednesday directed the Education Department to identify vacant teaching positions in government schools to expedite the Teachers Recruitment Examination 4 (TRE-4). He emphasized the need for swift action to begin the hiring process.
Mr. Kumar also reiterated that the 35% reservation for women in government jobs will only apply to female candidates who are domiciled in Bihar. This clarification follows the Bihar Cabinet’s July 8, 2025 decision, which made domicile status mandatory to avail of the women's reservation—a policy first introduced in 2016 that was previously open to women from other states as well.
Taking to social media platform X, Mr. Kumar stated, “I have instructed the Education Department to urgently assess teacher vacancies in government schools and take steps to organize TRE-4 for quick appointments.”
Earlier this year, Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary announced the recruitment of over 80,000 teachers in the TRE-4 phase. He added that nearly 20,000 positions left unfilled in TRE-3 would also be included in this round, pushing the total number of vacancies to at least 1 lakh.
With elections approaching, the Kumar government has been placing special focus on employment and job creation. Just days ago, the Bihar Cabinet approved a plan to generate one crore jobs over the next five years. Mr. Kumar also claimed that his administration has already provided over 10 lakh government jobs and created employment for around 39 lakh individuals.
However, the opposition Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) dismissed the TRE-4 announcement as a political ploy. Party spokesperson Chitaranjan Gagan said that the government already has data on the number of vacancies—over 3 lakh teacher posts—and accused the Chief Minister of making empty promises.
“If the government truly intends to proceed with the recruitment, it should issue a notification immediately, including domicile requirements, and launch the process,” Gagan said. He also pointed out that with the assembly election announcement expected within weeks, any delay might cause the process to be stalled by the Model Code of Conduct (MCC).
