Heavy monsoon rains over the past 48 hours have unleashed widespread destruction across northeast and south India, claiming at least 33 lives and displacing thousands. States including Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Karnataka, and Kerala have been severely affected by flash floods, landslides, and infrastructure collapse. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red alerts across multiple districts, warning of further heavy rainfall, landslides, and gusty winds up to 60 kmph.

In the northeast, Assam reported 5 deaths in Kamrup district due to landslides, while Meghalaya confirmed 3 fatalities from separate rain-related incidents in East Khasi Hills. Arunachal Pradesh saw 7 deaths, including 4 children, when a landslide struck a vehicle in East Kameng. Mizoram’s Lawngtlai witnessed house collapses and one confirmed death, while Nagaland and Tripura reported one fatality each. Floods have affected over 10,000 people across six districts in Assam, and major roadways have been blocked in Arunachal due to landslides, isolating several regions.

In Karnataka, Dakshina Kannada district recorded 5 deaths, including two toddlers and their grandmother buried in a house collapse. One child also died in a wall collapse in Mangaluru, and a lineman was electrocuted while repairing a power line. Kerala, battling swollen rivers and continuous rain, has opened over 70 relief camps sheltering thousands. Kasaragod, Kozhikode, and Kannur have reported extensive flooding, with homes submerged and roads washed away.

Authorities have urged residents to remain indoors and avoid riverbanks and landslide-prone zones. Rescue operations are ongoing, with state and national disaster response forces deployed. As rain continues to batter the region, officials warn that the risk of further damage remains high, urging strict adherence to safety advisories and evacuation protocols to prevent more casualties.
