Missing Delhi University Student's Body Recovered from Yamuna River
The body of a 19-year-old Delhi University student, missing since July 7, was recovered from the Yamuna river near the Geeta Colony flyover on Sunday evening, according to police. Sneha Debnath, a resident of Paryavaran Complex in south Delhi and originally from Tripura, had been the subject of a search operation after a missing person report was filed at the Mehrauli police station.
Police said Debnath left behind a handwritten note and had sent emails and messages to close friends in the early hours of July 7. Her friends told investigators that she had been emotionally troubled for several months. Investigators traced her last known location to the Signature Bridge, where a cab driver and several eyewitnesses saw a woman standing before she disappeared.
Authorities launched a large-scale search operation involving the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and local police teams, scanning the Yamuna river from Nigambodh Ghat to Noida. Her body was later identified by family members.
Debnath’s relatives and friends raised concerns about the lack of security measures on the Signature Bridge, which they described as a known suicide-prone area. “There isn’t a single functioning CCTV camera on the bridge,” one friend said, adding that the bridge falls under the jurisdiction of multiple police stations. While cameras had been installed by individual stations, none were operational, they claimed.
