A final-year MBBS student from Srinagar's government-run Lal Ded Hospital has come under fire for filming his "first delivery case" inside the operation theatre. The video, shared online as part of his personal vlog, shows scenes from within the theatre and partial visuals of a female patient on the bed. In the video, the student refers to it as their "first patient’s delivery," intended as a celebratory post.
The Jammu and Kashmir Medical Council (JKMC) strongly objected to the video. Dr. Salim Khan, Head of Community Medicine at Government Medical College (GMC), Srinagar, and JKMC President, emphasized the violation of patient rights. He condemned such vlogging practices for breaching the sanctity of medical institutions, where patient privacy, confidentiality, and autonomy must be upheld.
Dr. Khan noted that such actions are unethical and must be addressed according to the National Medical Commission’s ethical guidelines. He also issued a broader caution against the misuse of social media by medical professionals, stating that while it can be a powerful communication tool, it must be used responsibly.
He further warned doctors against online self-promotion, advertising, or any conduct that could damage the dignity of the medical profession. Displaying treatment outcomes, surgical footage, or patient images and videos online is strictly prohibited, he added.
