Following unrest over the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, Mamata Banerjee calls for unity and assures minorities of protection. She reiterates her dedication to religiou
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee said on 9 April, 2025, Wednesday that the Wqaf (Amendment) Bill will not be implemented in the state. Addressing a programme of the Jain community in Kolkata, Banerjee said she would protect the minorities and their properties.
“I know you are aggrieved because of the enactment of the Waqf Act. Have faith, nothing will happen in Bengal by which one can divide and rule. You send out a message that all have to stay together,” Mamta Banerjee said.
Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee urged the public not to be swayed by those inciting political unrest. Addressing recent violence in Murshidabad over the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, she expressed concern over its timing, especially given West Bengal’s significant 33% minority population. The bill was passed by the Lok Sabha on April 3 and the Rajya Sabha the following day, receiving presidential assent on Saturday.
Highlighting historical ties between Bengal, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and India, Banerjee emphasized her responsibility to protect all communities living in the state. She urged people to remain calm and united, saying, “When Didi is here, your safety and property are secure.”
