Karnataka government pins tragic stampede on RCB’s mismanagement, citing Virat Kohli video clips and poor crowd control during IPL victory celebrations, which c
A horrifying stampede outside Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on June 4 claimed 11 lives and injured over 50 people. In a status report to the Karnataka High Court, the state government directly held RCB’s event management and even Virat Kohli’s celebratory video clips responsible for the chaos-inducing crowd surge.
The tragedy unfolded as Royal Challengers Bengaluru celebrated their maiden IPL title. RCB reportedly informed police just a day prior but never sought formal permission under the mandatory seven‑day rule. Ignoring protocols, they and DNA Entertainment Networks promoted a free-entry gathering via social media, including a video from Kohli inviting fans to attend a clip that went viral and drew an estimated 300,000 people.
The sudden swell near stadium gates escalated into panic when organizers later clarified it was a pass-only entry. That confusion triggered a rush through gates 1, 2, and 21, causing thousands to get crushed amid rush crowd control. The government’s report stressed mismanagement by RCB, KSCA, and police in handling such a mammoth gathering.
In the previous response, the Karnataka High Court ordered the government's report to be fully disclosed, rejecting the request to maintain confidentiality. The judicial panels confirmed that there was a huge lack of coordination between the RCB management and the officials concerned, it was also revealed that neither necessary permissions were taken nor any concrete preparation for the mob management.
Between mourning and resentment, both RCB and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah have assured assistance - RCB started the "RCB Cares" initiative and offered ₹ 10 lakh to each affected family, while the Chief Minister promised full medical assistance. Nevertheless, many people are demanding accountability, some have even demanded resignation.
This calamity is a stark reminder that triumph without taking care of event planning can shift into tragedy. The sorrow and lessons of that day will undoubtedly shape India’s approach to large-scale celebrations
