India will not hesitate to strike back at cross-border terrorism, says Jaishankar. He addressed ties with China, the US, and India's neutral stance on Ukraine w
In a strong statement during an interview with French daily Le Figaro, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar declared that India will retaliate firmly against any cross-border terrorist attacks, including those originating from Pakistan. Citing the April 22 Pahalgam attack and India’s response on May 7, he warned, “We will hunt them down wherever they are.” Jaishankar clarified that India’s battle is not with any particular nation but with terrorism itself, and protecting Indian citizens remains a top priority.
Addressing international relations, Jaishankar commented on China’s growing ties with Pakistan and underlined the importance of maintaining consistency in global counter-terrorism policies, stating that “ambiguity or double standards” have no place. On India’s relationship with China, he admitted that ties have been tense since the 2020 border clashes in Ladakh, but hinted at gradual recovery, including the resumption of direct flights. Jaishankar also reaffirmed the strength of India–US relations, highlighting progress despite past trade tensions and emphasizing the importance of the Quad alliance with the US, Japan, and Australia.
On global issues, Jaishankar defended India’s neutral position on the Russia-Ukraine war, urging peace through negotiation and asserting India’s support for both nations. He emphasized that India represents the voice of the Global South, advocating for a balanced world order rooted in shared post-colonial experiences. Dismissing Western criticism over religious diversity in India, Jaishankar asserted that the nation’s multicultural identity is often misunderstood. Reiterating India’s aspirations for a permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council, he declared that India’s population, economy, and global contribution justify a more prominent role in shaping global governance.
