India Beholds Fresh Surge in COVID-19 Cases, Kerala and Maharashtra Among Worst Hit

In reaction to India's reported spike in COVID-19 cases, states have strengthened the Code (of conduct), expanded testing, and encouraged vaccinations.

In India, a fresh wave of COVID-19 infections has been observed, with 2,710 cases so far. The new figures from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare represents that Kerala has highest number of active cases at 1,147. Maharashtra follows with 424 active cases, while Delhi has recorded 294. There is a noticeable increase in the number of cases reported by Gujarat (223), West Bengal (116), Tamil Nadu (148), and Karnataka (148). Surprisingly, there are now no active conditions in Sikkim.

Over the past 24 hours, 511 new cases have been detected across the country. Since January 2025, 22 people have died due to complications related to COVID-19. Maharashtra has reported the most fatalities (7), followed by Kerala (5) and Delhi (2). One of the deaths in Delhi involved a 60-year-old woman who also had acute intestinal obstruction.

On the plus side, recoveries are also rising. 1,170 individuals have either recovered or been released from care since January. Kerala has had 338 recoveries, Delhi has seen 214, and Tamil Nadu has seen 183.

With the rising case numbers, both central and state governments are taking action. Authorities are increasing testing efforts, reinforcing public health precautions, and advising high-risk groups such as the elderly and those with underlying conditions to stay current with their COVID-19 vaccinations. Several states have also Unveiled updated health guidelines to avoid further spread.

The administration is still closely monitoring the situation and has advised citizens to be alert but not to panic. Important measures during this resurgent outbreak still include wearing masks in crowded locations, maintaining proper hygiene, and adhering to official health recommendations.
