The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a fresh alert on Monday, warning of more rain in Mumbai following heavy showers that disrupted daily life across the city. Lightning, thunderstorms, intense rain, and gusty winds reaching speeds of 50-60 kmph are forecast over the next three to four hours. A yellow alert remains in place for Mumbai, where overnight and morning downpours have already caused widespread waterlogging and transport delays.
The IMD stated on social media that thunderstorms with lightning and strong winds are likely in isolated areas of Mumbai and advised residents to exercise caution while stepping out. The rainfall is linked to a low-pressure system over Marathwada and central Maharashtra.
Many users responded to the IMD’s post, reporting heavy rainfall in areas like Raigad and Navi Mumbai. Data showed Colaba recorded 71.9 mm of rain, while the Mumbai airport received 33 mm between Sunday morning and Monday morning.
Rain is expected to continue through May 29, with yellow alerts for Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar until May 28. Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg are under orange alerts on certain days. The IMD also warned of lightning strikes, the collapse of weak structures, and brief power outages due to the severe weather.
