The Congress party on Thursday, May 29, 2025, alleged that the government is considering holding a special session of Parliament next month to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Emergency, calling it another attempt by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to divert attention from pressing national issues.

Congress General Secretary for Communications Jairam Ramesh said that since the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, the party has been urging the government to convene an all-party meeting led by the Prime Minister to address the incident’s implications. "That meeting has not happened," he said. Ramesh also noted that on May 10, the Leaders of Opposition in both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha had written to the Prime Minister, requesting a special parliamentary session to affirm national unity through a resolution. “That too was ignored,” Ramesh posted on X.

He added that it now seems a special session might be scheduled for June 25–26 to mark the Emergency’s 50th anniversary. “This is yet another textbook distraction tactic by the Prime Minister — a leader who has effectively imposed an undeclared Emergency over the past 11 years,” Ramesh remarked. He also accused the PM of avoiding accountability over several issues, including the delay in capturing the Pahalgam attackers, allowing U.S. President Trump to mediate a ceasefire, and giving a public pass to China on June 19, 2020.

The Congress has consistently questioned Modi's silence over Trump’s claims that his administration brokered peace between India and Pakistan.

On May 7, India launched Operation Sindoor, a series of precision strikes on terror infrastructure in response to the Pahalgam attack, which killed 26 people. In retaliation, Pakistan targeted Indian military installations on May 8, 9, and 10, prompting India to counterattack multiple Pakistani military positions. The hostilities lasted four days, after which both countries reportedly agreed to a ceasefire on May 10.

President Trump later claimed that Washington had played a mediating role in facilitating the ceasefire between the two nations.
