Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has taken strong objection to the protocol arrangements planned for a senior official of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited after a detailed itinerary went viral and triggered widespread criticism. The minister described the episode as improper and unacceptable, and a show cause notice has been issued to the official concerned, seeking an explanation within seven days.
The controversy revolves around an internal order detailing elaborate preparations for the proposed visit of Vivek Banzal, Director Consumer Fixed Access at BSNL, to Prayagraj on February 25 and 26. According to the document, nearly 20 separate tasks had been assigned to close to 50 officials and staff members to manage the visit. These included arrangements for travel, accommodation and various protocol related activities during the two day schedule.
Public attention intensified after details surfaced about specific items listed for personal comfort. Reports suggested that towels, grooming kits, slippers, hair oil and other personal items were to be arranged as part of the hospitality plan. The itinerary also reportedly included activities such as a ceremonial bath at the Sangam, temple visits and a boat ride.
Reacting to the backlash, Scindia said that such arrangements were not in line with established norms and traditions of public service. He stressed that accountability would be ensured and that misuse of official resources would not be tolerated. The ministry has indicated that action will be based on the explanation submitted in response to the notice.
Following the uproar, the proposed visit was cancelled. BSNL also issued a clarification stating that the arrangements were not aligned with organisational conduct rules and that steps had been initiated to address the issue. The company reiterated the need for strict compliance with professional standards.
The incident has reignited discussions about responsible use of public funds and appropriate protocol in government organisations. As authorities await a formal response from the official, many see this as a reminder that transparency and accountability remain central to public administration.
