Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently inaugurated new transport services in western Uttar Pradesh, marking a major push toward stronger regional connectivity. He flagged off the Meerut Metro and the Namo Bharat Regional Rapid Transit System, projects designed to improve travel between cities in the National Capital Region and reduce dependence on road transport.
The event was held at Shatabdi Nagar station in Meerut, where the Prime Minister also dedicated the full 82 kilometre Delhi Meerut Namo Bharat corridor to the nation. This corridor forms part of India’s first Regional Rapid Transit System, built to significantly cut travel time between Delhi and Meerut compared to traditional highway journeys.
The Namo Bharat trains are designed for high speed operations, with a maximum design speed of around 180 kilometres per hour. On this route, commuters can travel between Delhi and Meerut in nearly an hour, which is expected to ease daily commuting stress for thousands of passengers. Faster connectivity may also reduce traffic congestion and fuel consumption on busy highways.
Alongside the rapid rail service, the Meerut Metro was launched using the same infrastructure. This integrated model allows both regional trains and metro services to share tracks and stations, which is relatively unique in India. The metro section connects Meerut South to Modipuram, covering the distance in roughly 30 minutes at operational speeds of up to 120 kilometres per hour.
Officials believe that the combined system will support economic growth by improving access to jobs, education and business centres. Cities such as Sahibabad, Ghaziabad and Modinagar will benefit from smoother links with Delhi and Meerut. Reduced road traffic is also expected to contribute to lower pollution levels in the region.
During the event, several other development projects were also dedicated, reinforcing the focus on infrastructure expansion. While the full impact of the new transport network will be seen over time, it represents a significant step toward modern and efficient urban mobility in northern India.
