A renewed demolition drive near the historic Turkman Gate area in Delhi reignited tensions on Thursday as authorities moved to remove alleged illegal encroachments close to the Faiz-e-Elahi Masjid. The action was carried out in compliance with a Delhi High Court order and marked the resumption of a drive that had begun earlier in the week. As officials returned to the site, the situation quickly became tense, drawing protests and anxious reactions from local residents and bystanders.
During the earlier phase of the demolition, the situation escalated when a section of the crowd allegedly resorted to stone-pelting. Several police personnel were injured in the clashes, prompting authorities to deploy additional security forces to control the situation and prevent further violence. Law enforcement officials later stated that CCTV footage and circulating videos were used to identify those involved in the disturbance.
According to the police, 30 individuals have been identified for their alleged role in the violence. Some of them have already been taken into custody, while others are being traced. A few of the arrested suspects have been produced before a court and sent to judicial custody. Police teams continue to conduct raids and questioning as part of an ongoing investigation to establish accountability and prevent repeat incidents.
Adding a political dimension to the episode, Samajwadi Party Member of Parliament Mohibbullah Nadvi has been summoned for questioning. Officials said he was present in the area before the clashes broke out, and his actions during that period are now being examined. Authorities have clarified that the summons is part of the investigation process and that no charges have been framed against him at this stage.
The demolition drive has sparked sharply divided reactions. Supporters argue that the action is a lawful civic measure aimed at removing encroachments and restoring public land. Critics, however, have raised concerns over the timing and manner of the operation, especially given its proximity to a religious structure. Many have called for better communication and community engagement to avoid escalation.
Despite the unrest, authorities insist the demolition is legally mandated and will continue with caution. The situation in the area remains sensitive, with security forces maintaining a close watch as residents, civic bodies, and political voices continue to debate enforcement, safety, and respect for public sentiment.
