Srinagar Jammu Vande Bharat Train Launch Delayed

Date: Feb 25, 2026 | Source: Fela News

The much anticipated extension of the Vande Bharat Express service between Srinagar and Jammu has been put on hold just days before its scheduled launch on March 1. Railway officials confirmed the postponement, leaving many travellers and tourism stakeholders disappointed. The service was expected to strengthen rail connectivity between the two important cities and provide a smoother travel experience for passengers.

The original plan was to extend the existing Vande Bharat train that currently runs between Katra and Srinagar, allowing it to operate directly up to Jammu. Authorities had earlier indicated that the extended service would begin from March 1. The move was seen as a significant development for the region, especially for Jammu and Kashmir, where improved transport infrastructure plays a key role in boosting tourism and economic activity.

However, senior railway officials later announced that the extension has been postponed due to unavoidable circumstances. While no specific reason was disclosed, officials mentioned that the matter is under review and a new launch date will be announced after further consideration. The sudden change in plan has surprised many, especially since the earlier notification had created expectations among regular travellers.

The Vande Bharat service between Katra and Srinagar, launched last year, was widely appreciated for offering faster and more comfortable travel. The proposed extension to Jammu was expected to eliminate the need for passengers to switch trains or rely on road transport for part of the journey. Direct connectivity would have made travel more convenient and efficient.

For now, passengers will continue using the existing services between Katra and Srinagar. Those travelling between Jammu and Srinagar will still need to depend on current arrangements that involve transfers. Despite the delay, hopes remain that the authorities will soon finalise preparations and introduce the extended service safely.

Although this postponement is a temporary setback, many believe that once operational, the extended Vande Bharat route will significantly improve regional connectivity and strengthen travel infrastructure in the area.
